ASIA: GROWTH TARGETS OF GERMAN DEGUSSA-HULS

The German chemicals group Degussa-Huls AG aims to raise the share of Asia of the company's turnover to 15-20% in the next few years from 10% at present. The company is planning investments of DM 1bn in expanding production, acquisitions and cooperation arrangements. Degussa and Huls generate an annual turnover of just under DM 2.6bn in Asia, to which performance materials contribute DM 1bn, health and nutrition products DM 600mn, and specialist products, polymers and intermediaries DM 500mn. Just under 32% of the sales generated by Degussa-Huls in Asia is with products produced in the region. Almost 1,900 of the more than 2,500 staff employed there work in production.

GERMANY: AVENTIS CROP SCIENCE GOING OVERSEAS

Aventis Crop Science Deutschland GmbH, subsidiary of future Aventis SA, sees potential in the markets of North and Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region. Dieter Kauntz, head of plant protection of Agrevo in Germany, is setting hopes especially on environmental science. With new active agents, the company is to tackle important segments of the municipal and private crop protection and household hygiene markets. Aventis Crop Science will start in January 2000 with an annual turnover of about DM 8bn, leading the world plant protection market.
