A scanning tunneling microscopy study of electrostatic and proximity effects in tip-assisted migration and desorption of a DNA base molecule on SrTiO3
Article Abstract:
Three distinct manipulation modes of DNA base molecules on the SrTiO3(100)-square root of 5 x square root of 5 surface were identified using the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope. These are the lateral sliding by proximity effect and migration and desorption by electrostatic forces for adenine. The proximity effect was found to be due to the chemical forces acting with a critical tip-surface internuclear separation of 4.4 angstrom. Results also showed that the sliding and extraction exhibit bias polarity dependence.

Contribution of the phosphodiester backbone and glycosyl linkage intrinsic torsional energetics to DNA structure and dynamics
Article Abstract:
High-level ab initio quantum mechanical calculations have been undertaken on a range of furanose-based model compounds designed to model the intrinsic torsional energetics of the dihedrals epsilon, gamma, beta and chi in deoxyribonucleic acid. This work supports the view that the 3' side of the sugar in DNA torsion is intrinsically extremely flexible.
