Dynamics of nematic MBBA film induced by transient grating under a strong absorption condition
Article Abstract:
A nematic 4-methoxybenzylidene-4-n-butylaniline (MBBA) liquid crystal film that is 170 micrometers thick was subjected to crossed beam excitation to provide time profiles for transient grating diffraction signals. Findings indicate that a fast component produced from thermal diffusion near the surface exhibits a strong dependence on the polarization of the probe beam. As temperature approaches the phase transition point, optical nonlinearity increases to such an extent that multiple order diffractions are visible.

Infrared external reflection spectroscopy of adsorbed monolayers in a region of strong absorption of substrate
Article Abstract:
The experimental spectra of the oleate adsorbed species was recorded successfully at different incidence angles and two polarizations in the spectral region of very strong substrate absorption. Spectral simulations enabled the reproduction of the experimental spectra which gave detailed information about the surface composition and structure of the produced adsorbed layers. The adsorbed oleate forms surface calcium carboxylate species with two preferential conformations: unidentate-like and bidentate-like.
