GERMANY: LESS CFC-CONTAINING REFRIGERANTS
Article Abstract:
While in 1996 about 6,740 tons of the cfc-containing refrigerant R 12 were used in air conditioning and cooling technology in Germany, this amount was cut into half by the middle of 1998. Today, R 12 accounts for approximately 40% of cfc's from the cooling sector. The most important source of R 12 are air- conditioning systems of private cars, since only 7% of them have been modernised so far. With a share of 54%, R 134a, which does not affect ozone, is the most important substitute refrigerant. Other substitutes are R 404a, R 507 and R 413a. Still one third of R 12 substitutes used today, including in particular R 22, have a potential to harm the ozone layer.

Bayer noch st rker mit Polyisocyanaten
Article Abstract:
Bayer of Germany is strengthening its leading position in the world market for aliphatic polyisocyanate. Production capacities for hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) in Europe and North America are being extended by 30,000 t per year. A new plant is to be built in Asia. With the expansion, Bayer is reacting to the increasing demand for polyurethane products especially in eastern Asia. Particularly polyurethane coatings are gaining importance in the car and building industries.
