Mechanisms for photogeneration and recombination of multiexcitons in semiconductor nanocrystals: Implications for lasing and solar energy conversion
Article Abstract:
The effect of Coulomb interactions on carrier recombination and photogeneration mechanisms in nanocrystals based on II-VI and IV-VI compounds, including CdSe and PbSe, is investigated. The fine structure of the band-edge optical transitions and its effect on temperature-dependent single-exciton recombination dynamics, Auger recombination of multiexcitons in size- and shape-controlled nanocrystals and the direct generation of multiple excitons through carrier multiplication and its implications in photovoltaic technologies are discussed.

Single-molecule force spectroscopy measurements of "hydrophobic bond" between tethered hexadecane molecules
Article Abstract:
An atomic force microscopy (AFM) single molecule force spectroscopy is described to probe the interaction between molecules with low solubility and reports measurements of the strength and the length scale of the 'hydrophobic bond' between hexadecane molecules. It was found that approximately one-quarter of each molecule's surface is hydrated during force dissociation, consistent with an extended conformation of the hexadecane molecules in the dimer.
