Molecular nanowires of 1 nm diameter from capillary filling of single-walled carbon nanotubes
Article Abstract:
Molecular bismuth nanowires were produced via capillary filling using single-walled nanotubes. The procedure, which used bismuth in its gas, solution and solid phases, involved drawing the material inside the single-walled nanotubes where the single-crystal nanowires were generated. The solution phase process was determined to be the most efficient and versatile of the techniques. The strong capillary effect of single-walled carbon nanotubes will permit a wide range of application for the bismuth nanowires.

Gold nanowires and their chemical modifications
Article Abstract:
It has been possible to make ab initio local-density functional studies of the atomic structure, electron spectrum and conductance of a gold nanowire made up of a four-atom chain linked to gold electrodes. This work found dimerization of the gold atoms in the middle of the chain similar to a Peierls transition in one-dimensional systems.
