POLAND: COATINGS PRODUCTION, DEMAND UP

Article Abstract:

Poland's consumption of paints and varnishes is forecast to grow at an annual rate of 6.5%. Currently per capita consumption is 8.2 kg per year, compared with 14 kg in the European Union. There are about 600 producers of paints and varnishes in Poland, of which no more than 20 have more than 50 employees. In the first 10 months of 1998 Poland's production of paints, varnishes, sealants and primers grew 19.9% to 273,000 tonnes, following a 10.4% increase to 293,000 tonnes in the whole of 1997. The production of water-borne coatings has increased rapidly. Cieszyn-Wroclaw SA holds 31% of the market, Polifarb Debica SA 8%, Nobiles Wloclawek 7% and Polifarb Pilawa 4%. Imports account for 19% of Poland's paints and varnishes consumption in volume terms and 23% in value terms.

AUSTRIA: CHEMICAL INDUSTRY GROWTH IN 1998

Article Abstract:

The industry association forecasts the Austrian chemical industry to grow 4% in nominal terms in 1999. The industry is affected by the economic conditions in the US, Asia and Russia and in the sectors of construction, agriculture and paper industry. The association estimates the production of the industry to have grown by 5% to Sch 105.2bn in 1998, compared with a 6.7% growth in 1997. Export growth is estimated at 7.4%, accounting for 70% of output. Meanwhile, imports are believed to have increased 9.3% to Sch 119.4bn. Exports to eastern Europe increased 7.3% to Sch 24bn, while imports from the region amounted to Sch 8bn.
