Polarized ATR-IR studies of surface-field-induced anchoring of alkyl cyanobiphenyls
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the characterization of ordered liquid crystalline phases of alkyl cyanobiphenyls using polarized attenuated-total-reflection infrared spectroscopy. The experimental setup involved the deposition of a thin gold layer onto a ZnSe prism which allows the determination of the average molecular alignment within a mesoscopic distance from the substrate/liquid crystal interface. Results are in agreement with earlier ellipsometric and surface plasmon resonance experiments.

A vibrational spectroscopic study of molecular restructuring at surfaces of unidirectionally rubbed polyimide thin films
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the unidirectional rubbing of an extensive series of polyimide poly(biphenyl dianhydride-p-phenylenediamine)(BPDA-PDA) films supported on silicon substrates using high-precision polarized infrared vibrational spectroscopy together with spectral simulations. Results demonstrate the distinct structural perturbations of the BPDA-PDA imide rings that can arise. Findings provide a more complete picture of the molecular changes that can take place in a buffed surface.
