Unraveling the surface reactions during liquid-phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol on Pd/A1(sub 2)O(sub 3): An in Situ ATR-IR study
Article Abstract:
The palladium-catalyzed liquid-phase reaction of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde was investigated in the presence and absence of oxygen by attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy. The occurrence of the hydrogenolysis of the C-O bond of benzyl alcohol and formation of toluene indicates that Pd was present in a reduced state Pd(super 0) even in the presence of oxygen, in agreement with the dehydrogenation mechanism of alcohol oxidation.

Time-lapse STM studies of diastereomeric cinchona alkaloids on platinum metals
Article Abstract:
An investigation on the adsorption of cinchonidine (CD) and cinchonine (CN) on Pt(111) and Pd(111) single crystals is conducted by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in an ultrahigh vacuum system. Analysis of the appearances and surface mobility of CD and CN on platinum metals by time-lapse STM imaging has revealed some interesting differences between the different surface species populations.

Theoretical and spectroscopic study of the effect of ring substitution on the adsorption of anisole on platinum
Article Abstract:
The adsorption of anisole, 3,5-dimethylanisole and 3,5-bis-(trifluoromethyl)-anisole on Pt(111) is analyzed theoretically and compared to the adsorption of benzene by using density functional theory. The results revealed that although 3,5-dimethyl substitution on anisole, the substitution on anisole resulted in only a partial loss of adsorption energy and reactivity towards ring hydrogenation.
