WORLD: REVIEW OF AMINO ACID MARKET
Article Abstract:
According to Adolf Togel of Commserv, a Frankfurt-based subsidiary of Hoechst, the world market for amino acids is worth about DM 7bn to 8bn annually. In 1998 about 700,000 tonnes of glutamine was used to make about 900,000 tonnes of glutamate, which is used mainly as a food ingredient and represents a market value of DM 2.2bn to 2.4bn. The world market for glutamate is forecast to grow at an annual rate of 2% in the medium term. The consumption of the animal feed additives methionine and lysine amounted to 370,000 tonnes and 350,000 tonnes, respectively. Glutamine, methionine and lysine account for 70% to 75% of the world market in value terms. Other major amino acids include aspartic acid, phenylalanine and glycine, the consumption of which in 1998 is estimated at 12,000 tonnes each. The consumption of taurine is estimated at 6,000 to 7,000 tonnes, that of phenylglycine 4,000 tonnes, cysteine 2,000 to 3,000 tonnes and hydroxyphenylglycine 2,000 to 2,500 tonnes.

GERMANY: NEW TARGOR PRODUCTION SITE
Article Abstract:
Targor GmbH of Mainz invested more than DM 200mn in its production site in Wesseling. The company inaugurated a new facility for the production of polypropylene copolymers. The factory, which uses the so-called Novolen technology developed by Targor, has an annual capacity of 225,000 tons of polypropylene copolymers. Furthermore, the company set up two logistics centres, including warehouses with a capacity of 250 t each. One of them is for the new facility, the other for an existing production site for homopolymers in Wesseling. Targor is a joint venture of Hoechst and BASF for their PP-activities. With a European production capacity of 1.7mn tons per year, the company claims to be the leading European producer of PP. With a total capacity of 540,000 tons of PP per year, Wesseling is the largest production site of Targor. Targor grants licences for the Novolen PP technology all over the world.
