Water in silicate glass: 17O NMR of hydrous silica, albite, and Na2Si4O9 glasses
Article Abstract:
Nuclear magnetic resonance data on O17 were gathered from hydrous silicate glass samples prepared at high temperatures and high pressures using solid-media apparatus. NMR spectra for O17 in dry and hydrous albite glasses did not show significant differences, whereas hydration of Na2Si4O9 glass leads to significant differences. The latter hydrated sample exhibits nonbridging oxygen (NBO) with considerable decline from peak intensity. This indicates a coordination environment of NBO atoms with water incorporation.

Compositional mapping by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy
Article Abstract:
The laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for compositional mapping of solid surfaces was tested using a standard aluminum alloy. The LIBS was used to analyze the copper and magnesium emissions form the alloy. The LIBS was found to display high sensitivity, selectivity, wide dynamic range and versatility. It was able to produce a clear image of a copper conductor pattern and some copper contaminations around the conductor area.

Observation of electron-hole carrier emission in the Eu3+-doped silica xerogel
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the luminescence characteristics of Eu3+ encapsulated in sol-gel-derived optically transparent silica gels using time-resolved laser spectroscopy. The emission spectra originate mainly from Eu2+ at 410 nm at the xerogel stage. Results indicate that in the presence of Eu3+ ions, sol-gel matrix is an effective surface environment for the catalytic reduction of Eu3+ to form Eu2+ ions.
