POS Introduction Is Rising in Tempo in Japan
Article Abstract:
There are 5,500 retail stores using point-of-sale (POS) terminals in Japan, and the number is rising rapidly. 2,500 stores use optical character readers, and 3,000 use the JAN POS system. Merchandise codes are being standardized and source marking is rising. Seventy-two percent of food products are marked. By March 1985 source marking will be on ninety percent of goods. JAN bar code is expected to remain the leader. A graph plotting the number of registered companies of product maker codes from 1979 to 1984 is included.

Carbocation-like reactivity patterns in X'-substituted-4-biphenylylnitrenium ions
Article Abstract:
Four-biphenylylnitrenium ions react in water as if they were benzyl cations with two additional vinyl groups. Flash photolysis at 248 nm was used to irradiate this compound in 20:80 acetonitrile:water. A transient X'-substituted 4-biphenylylnitrenium ion was observed that was quenched by azide ion.
