Cysteine proteases and their inhibitors
Article Abstract:
Cysteine proteases which include the papain, calpain, streptopain, picornain and clostripain families, are found in viruses, bacteria, protozoa, plants and mammals. The mechanism of action of these enzymes is yet unknown although it has been recognized that the ion pair mechanism accounts for their unusually high reactivity. Endogenous cysteine protease inhibitors are classified into stefin, cystatin and kininogen families. A common feature of the synthetic inhibitors is a peptide segment that is bound to a nucleophilic attackable/substitutable group which can react with the cysteine residue of the active site.

Shark smiles
Article Abstract:
Each shark tooth is three inches long and cuts like a saw blade, which is useful for chewing meat from sea lions and dead whales. Sharks lose teeth throughout their lives and have up to six rows of teeth in each jaw. The diet of sharks is evident through the design of their teeth. The tiger shark's lower jaw teeth are sharp, suitable for cutting prey animals while the sand tiger shark teeth are spiky, ideal for eels.

The witness
Article Abstract:
The author cooperated with federal drug prosecutors and went underground in the late 1980's. She was so distressed with the gruff administration of the program that she actually feared federal agents more than the defendants, and attempted suicide.
