Electrochemical behaviour of silver in aqueous chromate solutions
Article Abstract:
The electrochemical behavior of silver has been studied using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry in aqueous K2CrO4 solution. The forward cyclic voltammograms gave one oxidation peak as a result of formation of Ag2CrO4. The height of the anodic peak is greater as the chromate concentration goes up and as the temperature and scan rate go up. Solid films formed on the anode were studied using X-ray diffractometry. The reverse voltammograms had two reduction peaks, an indication that two distinct surface layers of Ag2CrO4 are formed. There is an inner compact layer and an outer powdery layer, one of which is reduced where each of the peaks occurs.
