The physical and chemical properties of ultrathin oxide films
Article Abstract:
Ultrathin oxide films, having one to tens of monolayers, have been made by depositing oxide metal precursors in a background of oxygen. Metals used were Si, Mg, Ti, Fe, Ni, and Al, and films were supported on refractory metal substrates. Underlying oxide substrates can influence the electronic and chemical properties of oxides in overlayers greatly. Scanning probe imaging, Auger electron spectroscopy and other probing technologies and spectroscopies were used. Surface techniques can reveal more in these very thin samples than in bulk oxides.

Angle-dependent optical effects deriving from submicron structures of films and pigments
Article Abstract:
The angle-dependent optical effects deriving from submicron structures of films and pigments have been studied. These effects are realized through a number of procedures such as liquid crystals and oxide layers. These effects are used in a number of applications such as security printing, optical filters, cosmetics and car paints. Multilayer thin films with pearlescent pigments that reflect a portion of the visible light are used in greenhouses to control the light that shines of plants.

Chemical applications of neutron scattering
Article Abstract:
This article describes a neutron scattering technique to analyze structural dynamics of materials at the atomic level. Application of the technique to solid and liquid organic substances, polymers, and complex materials is presented.
