Scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopy probes of self-assembled, physisorbed monolayers: peeking at the peaks
Article Abstract:
Investigators have studied control and imaging of self-assembled, physisorbed monolayers in atomic force microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy investigations. Interpretation of the structures observed in scanning probe images of molecules self-assembled at gas-solid and liquid-solid interfaces has been successful and helped a lot by recent experimental/theoretical work. Studies are closing in on a general tunneling mechanism that could account for images of weakly bound insulating adsorbates. Dynamical behavior of the monolayers has been looked at as a function of time statically and after introducing an external perturbation. Novel studies have been carried out in selective control of monolayer structure use external and internal electric fields, solvent coadsorption and photons.

OH-H2 entrance channel complexes
Article Abstract:
The entrance channel to the OH + H2 to H2O + H hydrogen abstraction reaction has been studied by three methods. Complexes between the molecular hydrogen and the hydroxyl radical have been made stable in a well in the channel. Electronic spectroscopy has been used to look at them. Photodetachment of an electron from the H3O anion made it possible to look at the neutral reaction in shapes tested by isomeric anionic forms.
