Coping with the Hard-Copy Crunch

Article Abstract:

Because of its hard-copy storage problem due to recent growth, the Fifth Third Bank of Cincinnati had a survey done by the Department of Office Administration of Miami University. The analysis showed that in-house storage would save $45,643 over off- site storage over a six-year period. The bank chose Spacesaver Corporation's system of boxes stored on mobile shelves. They are contained in wheel-mounted carriages with a mixture of manual and electrical controls. The new record center, providing 12,908 cubic feet of storage at $1.93 per cu. ft. of file cabinets at $2.73 per cu. ft. Reductions in operating costs, especially retrieval time, will save $20,318 annually. Identification numbers and retention schedules are computerized.

Managing Human Assets - It's Time for New Thinking

Article Abstract:

The traditional relationship between management and employees is a rigidly hierarchical one: authority and control on top, subordination and dependence on the bottom. Adversarial confrontations, excessive restrictions, and low employee morale, motivation, and commitment are all among the corollaries. An alternative model, inspired in part by the Japanese example, is a more flexible arrangement. Employees are permitted, if not encouraged, to take part in the formulation of policies and decisions affecting the future of the company as well as themselves. A diagram shows tools for employee development.
