Getting physical
Article Abstract:
Elaborate planning takes place before motion-capture house BioVision puts sensors to actor and commences filming. Working from a list detailing the number, type and duration of moves, BioVision and the client discuss props, alternative camera setups, turnaround times and other considerations. The actual filming is subject to many unpredictable factors. BioVision advises the client to hire an actor experienced with the exaggerated motions required of motion-capture work. BioVision's optical system requires placing lightweight reflective markers on the actor. During shooting, the markers reflect light back to the a seven-camera system at a client-specified sampling rate. BioVision processes the digitized motions with proprietary software on SGI computers. BioVision charges $2,400 per eight-hour day for a one- to four-day project and $2,000 for each additional day. Motion data processing is extra.

Watch your back end
Article Abstract:
Transactional sites on the Internet differ from real-world stores in being always open for business. This means that anyone who plans to sell products over the Web usually needs an automated transaction-management system that processes credit-card information, calculates tax, oversees export restrictions, manages pricing and order fulfillment, and guards against fraud. However, merchants themselves typically are concerned primarily with the quality of the product or service they provide. Consequently, they may lack the resources and expertise to deal with such arrangements. Fortunately, companies are available that specialize in providing back-end services. A list of eight such companies is presented, together with phone numbers and Web addresses. Services offered are described.
