Introducing Machine Monitoring - Success and Failure
Article Abstract:
Computers can be used to monitor machines in manufacturing and processing. The computer will provide valuable information about systems productivity and down-time. Monitoring shop floor activity will also give management a powerful tool to prevent variations in the procedures used by workers. Machine monitoring systems are unpopular with workers, and the installation can be tricky. Either management can sell the idea, or negotiate their use or they can be imposed. If workers can be convinced to accept these types of monitoring devices, management can gain an important advantage.

Retrospectives: Says Law
Article Abstract:
'Say's Law' is a term that appears to have emerged in the 20th century, and it deals with a relationship between supply and demand. Jean Baptiste Say was a French economist who was born in 1767, and who focused on the real economy as important for national welfare. Say's Law is a set of ideas, rather than a single statement, and these ideas include the notion that supply generate income that is needed for demand for products that are supplied. Say's ideas were developed as a response to mercantilism and were part of a wider debate of his time.
