Plastic lens serves gigabit optical communications
Article Abstract:
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. has developed the first inexpensive plastic lens that can handle gigabit optical communications. The plastic lens consists of polyolefin, which is little changed during temperature changes. The lens incorporates diffraction devices on its surfaces and uses temperature compensation technology to make use of wavelength fluctuations in semiconductor laser light sources to correct lens focusing. By using the lens, laser module makers can realize savings of about one-third the cost of conventional models.
