The Electronic Cottage: Haven or Nightmare?

Article Abstract:

Prior to the nineteenth century, people typically worked where they lived and lived where they worked. The Industrial Revolution changed all this. By the early twentieth century, cottage industries were the exception rather than the rule. Now, in the 1980s, the proliferation of personal computers is beginning to push the pendulum back in the other direction towards what is commonly called telecommuting. Work at home, whatever its specific form, has a number of clearly positive dimensions: no need to commute, no need for mothers to leave their young children, no need to adhere to a strict nine-to-five, Monday through Friday schedule. The major disadvantage to working at home, identified by nearly all studies of the subject, is loneliness. This single finding points to the probability that telecommuting will never be for everyone; at least one corporation, Rank Xerox, has developed a systematic selection procedure designed to distinguish people with the personality characteristics necessary to cope with the pressures peculiar to working at home.
