Peripherals On the Paper Trail
Article Abstract:
An overview of three types of peripheral devices for an office automation system is given. First discussed is the optical character recognition unit (OCR or scanner). The device is explained and the features of different units are described. An OCR is a somewhat expensive piece of office equipment, but it can measurably reduce the paper load in an office. Since a totally paperless office will never be a reality, a sheet feeder is another peripheral device automated offices need. The two types of feeders, mechanical and intelligent, are described. Finally the use and purpose of printers in an automated office is discussed. A detailed chart of these three peripheral devices, their fearures, and major vendors is given.
