Access routes
Article Abstract:
The need for disabled housing is increasing in the UK but production is decreasing. There are about 6.5 million disabled people in the UK. The Access Committee for England is lobbying the government to include universal accessible housing into the Building Regulations. They argue that if all new houses are built to be accessible then the demand for special needs housing would diminish. The Access Committee believes that all houses should have level access, wide door frames, adequate circulation space in halls and passages, and a downstairs toilet. The major problem is cost.

Revealing design
Article Abstract:
The Royal Institute of British Architects has organised an exhibition 'Art of the Process' to detail the methods and procedure of architectural design commencing in Mar 1993. It is funded by the Arts Council and IBM. Many architectural projects are detailed. The UK recession has resulted in high unemployment amongst architects. Contractors and clients want architects to measure and quantify design as part of their cost-cutting operations.
