Hames Homes founder Curt Hames has carved a succesful career in the manufactured home industry, not only as a successful retailer and developer, but as an effective industry leader. Hames built Hames Homes from the ground up, originally as a franchise of Homestead Homes and eventually buying out the franchise to become Hames Homes. Hames has made Iowa the headquarters of his successful retail business and has expanded from a single development to three successful community housing developments. Hames time off from the business is spent forging community relations and increasing the stature of the manufactured home industry in the political scene.

MH sales in the Silicon Valley call for a different approach

Advantage Homes, located in Silicon Valley, adopts different approach to manufactured home retailing. Since Silicon Valley forms the southern third of the Greater San Francisco Metropolitan Area, housing is a seller's market in the area because the demand for housing has far exceeded the supply. Advantage Homes focuses on the promotion of four to five best-selling models, as well as high-quality multi-section models and site homes primarily in land-lease communities rather than on a private property.

Manufactured housing retailers are beginning to realize the importance of investing in environmental displays to attract more customers, as competition among independent retailers continues to heat up. In presenting home models to potential customers, retailers now know that it is vital to install such furnishings as appliances and landscaped exteriors. An account of how some retailers in Michigan, Virginia and Ohio view and manage environmental displays is presented.
