Arriving at Paddington

Article Abstract:

Architectural firm Nicholas Grimwshaw & Partners has been responsible for a 32.9 million pounds sterling redesign of Paddington station in London, England. This project has focused on opening up the station, introducing a new retail area and improving circulation. The main information board has been replaced with banks of screens on the sides of the concourse, thus opening up sight lines down the central vault of the station. Previously wasted space is now being used for check-in desks for the Heathrow Express, along with a Sainsbury's local and several cafes.

The ones that got away

Article Abstract:

A number of rather extravagant schemes were designed for the Docklands area of London, England, in the mid-1980s. However, financial considerations meant that these did not actually go ahead. The London Docklands Development Corp. considered high-density developments of 20-storey office blocks for the Isle of Dogs, for example, and a glamorous restaurant was also planned. The Canary Wharf tower was actually built, but the scheme was considerably scaled down.

Blocks around the docks

Article Abstract:

Housing development in London's Docklands has remained static for several years, but with the advent of new public transport links a new generation of homes is under way. Unlike homes developed in the 1980s, the modern residential developments display clean lines, use natural materials and are affordable. An overview of current residential development projects in the area is presented.
