Art nouveau

Article Abstract:

There have been significant challenges associated with designing and constructing an extension to Charles Rennie Mackintosh's first major public building in Glasgow, Scotland. Architectural firm Page & Park designed a slimline extension that is very different from the original building, but there have been difficulties during the construction process. The handover of the renovated and extended building, which will be known as The Lighthouse, Scotland's Centre for Architecture, Design and the City, will now be delayed until Apr 1999.

The report by Sir Alan Bailey investigating new fire protection measures for historic royal palaces following the fire at Windsor Castle, recommended extensive modernisation of fire detection systems and the installation of fire compartmentation. Over 750 detectors are to be installed in the fire restoration area at Windsor Castle, and this required carefully planned wiring routes so as not to damage good plaster and panelling not affected by the fire.
