Back from the brink
Article Abstract:
Higgs and Hill has undertaken a 6.2 million pounds sterling refurbishment of St Clement's House, a nine-storey office block in Bristol, England, for British Telecommunications. The 8,000 sq mt building, constructed in the 1960s to house a GPO telephone exchange, was in a very poor state of repair, and it initially been thought that there would be no choice but to demolish it. However, it was decided to retain the building because any new building on the site would have had to be three storeys lower. The modern design of the refurbished building has been praised by planners.

Natural selection
Article Abstract:
Translucent wood stain is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to gloss paint for doors and windows, and stains now hold 12% of the paint and woodcare market. Stain first became popular during the 1980s housing boom, as it is quick and easy to apply, thus allowing builders to complete homes more rapidly. It is also popular because it enhances the natural qualities of the wood, rather than disguising them as paint does.
