Wasted opportunities

Article Abstract:

UK reserves of natural aggregate will run out in 2013. The Department of Environment is making moves to impose a waste dumping tax to encourage builders to use recycled demolition rubble and lightweight aggregate. Furnace waste is ideal for lightweight aggregate mix. The power industry dumps 7 million tonnes of it annually. Engineers are wary of leightweight aggregate as material has to be consistent and the level of impurities needs to be ascertained. Lightweight aggregates are in between 15% to 20% lighter but are not as strong as natural aggregates. They are also more expensive to produce.

Larva louts

Article Abstract:

A team of UK and Irish scientists are researching the behaviour of the death-watch beetle to seek better ways of controlling it in buildngs. The researchers need to capture live specimens to continue research. Their research has already found that saturation chemical treatment is not effecitve against the timber-boring pest. It has also found tht many beetles are destroyed by spiders.
