Outlawing the cowboys

Article Abstract:

The Automobile Association (AA) is planning an Approved Supplier Scheme for the construction industry in the United Kingdom. A report from the National Consumer Council found that 75,000 customers received a poor standard in construction work. The public spend one billion pounds sterling on cash-in-hand work every year in order to avoid paying VAT. Some managers in the construction industry welcome the AA's proposals as raising the level of work within the industry. Others fear that the AA will be unable to administer the scheme and that pay may be reduced to an unacceptable level.

Gearing up

Article Abstract:

Construction company, John Laing is downsizing its computer systems. The firm's ageing mainframe is to be phased out and replaced with a system based on workstations, desktop computers and packaged software. Information technology director, David Jones is leading the change which he claims will alter management structures, improve productivity and save money. The project has begun with the sale of the mainframe to a facilities management company which will service Laing until 1994 when the new system will be in place.
