He has written company software, produced his own Pentium computer by upgrading a 486 machine, and is keen to reap the business benefits of automation. Area offices will have an intranet link, and all staff will all have easy access to the company's cost information database. However, the company will restrict the provision of advice on e-mail in order to protect professional indemnity, and will still keep and deliver important documents in hard copy.

Claire Makin is the first woman chief executive of the RICS and she is working to determine what construction professionals want from the RICS. Makin has worked at firms such as Gerald Eve and Richard Ellis and was previously a director of consultancy at DTZ Debenham Thorpe, a chartered surveyor. Any changes will be preceded by extensive market research and Makin is aiming to prevent apathy amongst surveyors.

Shifting scans: a new 3D laser system could be a quick and effective way of identifying structural movement in buildings, while avoiding the pitfalls of traditional surveying methods
Article Abstract:
Scientists at the Building Research Establishment have developed a 3D laser survey system which removes the requirement for strain gauges, external scaffolding or photogrammetry. A laser is combined with an array of motor driven mirrors which direct the beam, and a personal computer which controls the mirrors. The laser is directed towards targets on a building and a search program is activiated.
