Business support and challenge funding
Article Abstract:
The UK Department of Trade and Industry invited bids from business support schemes for two new challenge budgets in October 1996. These are part of the government's aims to revitalize industrial sponsorship of business support services and to localize them. Applying the challenge element here is part of the initiative to promote competitiveness. The Local Competitiveness fund is for partnerships with TECs or Business Links. Matching private sector funding of at least 50% will be expected for bids to the Sector budget which is for trade associations and groups of firms.

Funding crisis hits games stadium
Article Abstract:
It is believed that the city council in Manchester, England, has not succeeded in raising an original target of 41 million pounds sterling in partnership funding to match the 113 million pounds sterling which the Sports Council has notionally allocated for the construction of facilities for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. The Sports Council has already handed over 23 million pounds sterling to fund a swimming pool, and 90 million pounds sterling is available for other facilities. Of this, 60 million pounds sterling will be used for a multipurpose stadium.
