California ban on 2-strokes is dead-for now
Article Abstract:
Assemblywoman Debra Bowen (D-Marina Del Rey) withdrew a bill that would ban two-stroke engine sales in California due to opposition from the boating industry. The bill would have prohibited two-stroke engines, such as outboards, from the market after 1998. The measure also sought to ban two-stroke engines starting in 2003 from waterways that also provide drinking water. The planned ban circled around the controversial gasoline additive MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether), a contaminant that causes taste and odor problems in drinking water. Marine industry experts said leaking underground fuel storage tanks, not the two-stroke engines, causes the contamination.

Silence is golden for Volvo engine manufacturers
Article Abstract:
Volvo Penta AB is collaborating with Swedish engineering firm Trelleborg Novibra and the Institute of Technology in Kariskrona-Ronneby to reduce by 15% noise levels in Volvo's marine engines. Part of the collaboration involves installing a matrix of 12 microphones in the cockpit to register and analyze sound waves with the aid of a computer. Volvo committed two 305-hp Volvo Penta TAMD63 turbocharged diesels to the testing, and Trelleborg Novibra provided passive dampers and expertise in vibration reduction.
