Clive talks back
Article Abstract:
Construction Confederation Chairman Clive Benfield wants small building firms to have a role in private finance initiative projects. He feels the introduction of the quality mark will work against small builders as customers will still use cowboy firms, which can undercut builders who have to pay VAT. Benfield is KB Benfield Group's managing director. He became managing director in 1977 and has been instrumental in helping the company increase its turnover to reach 10 million pounds sterling. Benfield is proud he started out as a carpenter and builder.

Interior: the inside story
Article Abstract:
Fit-out work is not necessarily any easier than new-build construction, according to construction contractor Interior Managing Director David King. The company, which specializes in fit-outs, must always take great care when working around building occupiers. The company is now willing to give price guarantees on its contracts, but has no plans to boost its capital base by going public at this stage. Some observers believe that in the longer term the company may go public to raise funds to invest in private finance initiative schemes.

Sir Frank Lampl
Article Abstract:
Bovis Construction Chmn Sir Frank Lampl believes that his future is with the company in some form. Discussions are currently taking place on this issue. He feels that it may be a benefit for the company's search for a new partner that he is a leading executive who sees an early end. He wishes to expand his company's skills base, and also believes that the company needs to grow. He does not feel that a deal with another UK company would lead to higher margins.
