Article Abstract:
The construction of an office building for Friends' Provident in the centre of Manchester, England, involved the demolition of a 1960s tower block and the refurbishment of a grade 1-listed bank building. Planning permission was obtained in Oct 1993 for a 14-storey building with around 8,000 sq mt net of lettable space. The budgeted cost was 11.1 million pounds sterling, and the final cost was 11.43 million pounds sterling. Design features include a double-basement car park and a panellised wall cladding system of precast concrete panels faced with natural stone.

Aukett Associates acted as architect and services engineer on the speculative Clockhouse Place office headquarters development for Hanover Property Unit Trust on Bedfont Lakes Business Park near Heathrow Airport, England. The office block, which had a budgeted cost of 14,600,000 pounds sterling, had to be capable of being let on a single or multi-tenancy basis. It was completed on time in Mar 1997 after a 56-week programme. Features include a standing-seam aluminium roof and aluminium double-glazed curtain walling with limestone spandrels.

Knoll MicroCheck, which develops and markets biocides, selected a greenfield site on a business park outside Nottingham, England, for an international office and biochemical laboratory development. Hall and Tawse was appointed as design-and-build contractor for the project, which began in Oct 1996 and was completed in Aug 1997. The open-plan office encourages interaction between staff, while the laboratory facilities make use of latest technology, including flush-cleanable surfaces.
