Design and build contracts ensure overall design and management of a construction project rests with the contractor, although design changes may be made under employer's requirements. Total liability may be placed on the contractor by any employer's design teams being placed under the legal responsibility of the contractor. Contractors may find themselves responsible for meeting the cost of alterations despite the changes being instigated by the employer.
