Quantity surveyors have taken on an auditing role since the emergence of management contracting. Construction management has had the same effect on the industry, with quantity surveyors increasingly carrying out auditing duties. Suggestions for how the quantity surveyor should approach the role as auditor are included, along with tips from chartered accountants on how to manage professional liability.

Proving contractors' claims

Building contracts can offer protection for contractors in the event of time extensions or work variations. However the level of detail required to prove loss and expense is a continuous source of debate between contractors and quantity surveyors. Two cases described highlight the need for sufficient details supporting information on loss and expense.
