Despite mistakes, Jones endorses Cabela's deal
Article Abstract:
Outboard Marine Corp (OMC) chmn and CEO David Jones said they would push through with the Cabela's deal while acknowledging that they committed some mistakes in handling the deal. OMC's decision to allow Cabela's, the big outdoor supplies retailer to sell engines up to 35 hp through its catalog and on its Web site angered many dealers. Dealers said Cabela's could undercut them on price while leaving to deal with post-sale warranty and service issues. Dealers also protested that they were prohibited from advertising prices in the Internet and to limit their sales to their respective areas.

A 5-step plan for dealers averts trade-in troubles
Article Abstract:
Boat dealers can prevent serious problems inherent in selling defective boats by using a five-step plan. Dealers are advised never to pass on problem boats or to conceal defects since this could damage their reputation or cause them to be sued. The five step involves having trades inspected by a surveyor, reducing the trade-in price of a problem boat, involving manufacturers in selling a defective boat, reduce trade-in allowance on bad boats until repairs become practical and to develop a reputation for selling and accepting boats that are in good shape.

'In the box' engine sales are no bargain in the end
Article Abstract:
Outboard Marine Corp's (OMC) new marketing arrangement with Cabela's Outfitters has caused resentment and confusion among OMC's dealers. Dealers feel betrayed because OMC eliminated normal dealer transactions to allow a nationwide discounter to undercut and sell in their marketing areas. While the arrangement with Cabela's could lessen prices, consumers could face significant difficulties with tax and titling issues when buying from Internet discounters.
