Eddie Bauer expands stores, catalogs on German market

Article Abstract:

Eddie Bauer Germany will add five catalogs and more stores in Munich, Switzerland and Berlin, Germany, to increase its retail network to nine. The company's retail and mail order sales in 1997 totaled 60 million German marks. Unlike its US parent company, Otto Versand, the company limits its products to Eddie Bauer sportswear line. In 1998, the company rolled out a spring and summer catalog of 116 pages each. It also plans to roll out three new catalogs for the second half of the year. Fall Resource will be introduced in September, Winter Resource in October and Holiday Resource in November 1998.

Amazon in compromise over German court case

Article Abstract:

Amazon.com's German subsidiary, amazon.de., has reached a compromise with a German association of mail order book sellers following a lawsuit which charged that amazon.de had engaged in false banner advertising. The suit claimed that surfers who wanted to look at a specific category were brought to amazon.de's Web site, where they were told that they could order books on a similar subject, even though the surfers were looking for a specific topic and not books about the topic.

Germany's Quelle gives up on China

Article Abstract:

Germany-based Quelle has given up on its China venture after three years of trying to establish a catalog business in the country. The largest mail order house in Europe s negotiating the sale of its 70% share in a joint venture with Shanghai Post. Its disappointment stems from the fact that the mail order business is practically unknown in China and the retail trade there is very well developed.
