Employer groups set for relaunch
Article Abstract:
A new umbrella body covering construction employers' trade organizations in the UK could be established by January 1997. The membership will come mainly from the current BEC Council members, the Civil Engineering Contractors Association and the House Builders Federation. Both the BEC Council and the HBF are yet to finalize their approval but this is expected. The new body will be called the Construction Confederation and is slated to have a budget in excess of 7 million pounds sterling and a staff of 170. It will initially operate from the BEC's London premises but will be looking for new headquarters in 1997.

Professionals' training body rejected
Article Abstract:
The UK Construction Industry Council has seen the department for education and employment reject its application for National Training Organisation status. This development has been strongly criticized by leaders of construction professionals, who feel that the needs of professionals provide full justification for the Construction Industry Council gaining National Training Organisation status. However, this status is likely to be awarded to the Construction Industry Training Board and specialist organisations for plumbers and engineering services.

Raynsford launches 'green' debate
Article Abstract:
The UK Dept of the Environment, Transport and the Regions is to invite engineers, clients, contractors, trade unions, architects and environmentalists to comment on a discussion paper detailing options for a sustainable construction policy for the government. The department recognizes that there must be a clear economic argument in favour of sustainable construction. For this reason, it will seek to convince clients that more emphasis should be placed on lower life-cycle costs than on reducing short-term costs by using less sustainable materials.
