English devolution: has Labour got it right?

Article Abstract:

There have been mixed reactions to the UK government's plans to establish nine Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) by Apr 1999. The government believes that this approach will allow English regions to compete more effectively with Scotland and Wales for inward investment and external grant aid. However, some observers feel that the RDAs will lack real power and will simply bring more complicated bureaucracy. The RDAs will not control the vital policy areas of Selective Regional Assistance and Training and Enterprise Councils.

UK work helps Rogers double profit

Article Abstract:

Architectural firm Richard Rogers Partnership is likely to have achieved profit of 1.75 million pounds sterling in the year to Jul 1997, with turnover at 10.2 million pounds sterling. The concern has faced a rise in staff costs, but has been able to generate additional revenue. Its work in the UK now contributes around 70% of turnover, while its work in Japan and Germany has been negatively affected by economic decline. It has avoided growing too rapidly, and this has created a stable financial position.

Europe's recovery speeds up

Article Abstract:

The European construction industry will continue to see mixed fortunes in 1998. However, the overall rate of recovery is set to be higher than in 1997. There will be particularly strong growth in the construction industry in Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain. However, the growth forecast made by Euroconstruct for France has been reduced to 2%, from 3%, while the recession in the German construction industry will only just be coming to an end.
