FL puts end to sweepstakes registration
Article Abstract:
The Florida Legislature has excluded funding for sweepstakes registration in its 1999 fiscal budget, allowing sweepstakes sponsors to proceed with their promotions without registering the contests first starting July 1, 1998. However, sponsors of sweepstakes offering prizes worth over $5,000 are still required to submit a copy of the rules and regulations of the game promotion, a list of all prizes and a $100 nonrefundable filing fee at least seven days prior to the start of the promotion. Florida will start terminating or returning all sweepstakes trust accounts and surety bonds on July 1, 1998 and will give back registration for games that will start after July 1, 1998 along with an explanation.

Spam finally gets its rightful place on the Web
Article Abstract:
Hormel Foods Corp., the Austin, MN-based maker of canned-meat products since 1937, has rolled out an online fan club for its best-selling meat brand, Spam. For $15, Spam fan club members receive a plastic membership card, an official membership card, an official membership certificate, a T-shirt and a quarterly newsletter called "A Slice of Spam." Hormel has been defending Spam's image on the Internet. In 1997, the company tried unsuccessfully to prevent one-time self-proclaimed "Spam King" Sanford Wallace from using the word in promotions for his unsolicited bulk e-mail company, Cyber Promotions.
