Getting to know the new face at Balfour Beatty
Article Abstract:
Balfour Beatty Construction International Ltd Chief Executive Mike Welton suggests that the construction market in the UK has not improved, with few large projects planned for the future and the road building program still to be finalized by the government. Welton is trying to change the way Balfour works with its customers, subcontractors and supply companies although some subcontractors deny any changes have been made. Balfour's profits in 1996 were 10.3 million pounds sterling a fall from 12.6 million pounds sterling although interim results for 1997 show some improvement.

Contractors asked to let rivals on site
Article Abstract:
The UK Construction Industry Board (CIB) believes that construction productivity could be boosted by encouraging contractors to welcome competitors and visitors from other industries to their sites. The CIB is considering the possibility of boosting the exchange of information through the Inside UK Enterprise plan, which has the support of the Department of Trade and Industry. It hopes to chose between 20 and 30 companies to initially act as hosts, with host companies covering clients, contractors, subcontractors and consultants.

Contractors should be more like us
Article Abstract:
The UK construction industry would benefit from taking a more serious approach to commercial operations, according to construction materials firm Hanson chief executive Andrew Dougal. Hanson has undergone a series of de-mergers during the 1990s, which has made the firm more competitive and operations focused. Dougal claims government support of the industry is imperative, with more attention being paid to infrastructure investment and the commercial housing market.
