Tow providers continue court battle

Article Abstract:

Vessel Assist Assn of America has been favored in a California Superior Court ruling over its legal dispute with BoatU.S. regarding marine towing rights. The court decision, which was released on Dec 23, 1999, bars BoatU.S. from prohibiting its towers from directly billing or accepting payment from Vessel Assist, responding to Vessel Assist members and displaying any identifying indica of Vessel Assist. The case invovling the two tow providers has been transferred to the District Court in Washington, DC, in Jan 2000.

Hinckley Co. of Southwest Harbor, Maine has settled seven of the eight lawsuits it filed to protect its boat designs from being copied by other boat manufacturers. Dealers against which the lawsuits have been filed have agreed to changes in design and stop selling boats that incorporated Hinckley trade dress. 3 congressmen pushing broad PWC restrictions

Article Abstract:

The Personal Watercraft (PWC) Responsible Use Act has apparently been drafted without any input from the marine industry. The proposed bipartisan Congressional bill would require PWC to maintain no-wake speed on all coastal waters including the Gulf of Mexico and Great Lakes under a number of conditions. While the PWC industry supports some of the provisions of the bill, it decried the environmental restrictions which were couched in vague terms.
