Latham on Egan
Article Abstract:
Sir John Egan's 1998 report on the state of the UK construction industry has called for the establishment of longer term relationships rather than always employing contactors with the most competitive prices. The 1994 Constructing a Team report supported zero defects and a 30% cut in costs by 2000. Sir Egan has reiterated these demands by calling for a 10% reduction in capital costs annually. Sir Egan also calls for the reduction of costs similar to those in other industries, such as in steel and grocery selling. Sir Egan's report is mostly complimentary about the construction industry.

Article Abstract:
Leading UK construction contractors Bovis Lend Lease, Laing, Kvaerner, Balfour Beatty and Amec are discussing plans to create the first industry-wide electronic marketplace linking suppliers, contractors and clients. Supporters of electronic trading believe that it will reduce waste and boost margins, as well as eliminating traditional barriers within the construction industry. Several organizations are considering producing electronic marketplaces, or portals, for construction, and there are already many sites for ordering construction materials.
