Is Egan on target?
Article Abstract:
Sir John Egan's report into construction, in the UK, has been criticised by those in the industry as being unhelpful and likely to cause resentment. Although some have praised the report for its realism. A number of smaller companies have pointed out the report does not take into consideration their businesses. Sir Egan has called for 20% more projects to be finished on time, within their quoted price. He suggests construction and design could be more closely integrated. He calls for an end to competitive tendering. UK Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott asked Sir Egan to conduct the report.

All risks policy
Article Abstract:
Risk analysis has been applied successfully to the UK construction industry and has superseded value engineering. It involves identification of the main risks by the project team and the quantification of these risks in terms of time and cost using computer software. Once quantified contingency plans can be created. Simulation techniques such as Monte Carlo and sensitivity techniques are built into the computer programmes. Risk analysis improves the chances of up-to-date job completion. Bovis is using risk analysis on the BAA terminal five at Heathrow.

New CIC chief awaits Egan challenge
Article Abstract:
The UK Construction Industry Council (CIC) has elected the first architect to be chairman in 1998. Robin Nicholson will take up his new role on 17 June, with one of his main objectives being the smooth implementation of recommendations made in the Egan report, which should improve the finish quality of buildings. Nicholson believes his most important role is to act as a central hub for all those involved in the construction industry, from government down to sub-contractors.
