The National Housing Building Council should provide a lead in setting high standards in the UK construction industry, according to sheltered housing developer McCarthy & Stone founder John McCarthy. He places very strong emphasis on high standards on his company's sites, and sometimes makes unannounced inspections. The company suffered difficulties during the recession of the early 1990s, and he acknowledges that this made him aware of the need to be cautious about diversifying.
