Economic outlook
Article Abstract:
The Scottish construction industry has experienced real growth of around 4% in the year to the second quarter of 1999. The leisure market is thriving and office market is buoyant, with the value of private commercial contracts increasing by 45%. Yet new contracts for housing construction in Scotland are down in value by 20%, for 1998-99, which is similar to conditions in the rest of the UK. It has been predicted new orders for private commercial construction work in Scotland will continue to rise, with the total construction output during 2000 increasing by 6% in value, compared to 1998.

Lead times
Article Abstract:
There has been a lengthening of delivery times in 10 sectors of the UK construction industry as a result of the holiday period during Aug 1998. Delivery times for drylining have increased by one week, while the lead-in for bespoke panellized cladding has lengthened by two weeks to 42. Delivery times for concrete works have increased to 10 weeks, while in the boiler sector lead times have extended by two weeks to six. Overall, delivery times are still high, indicating that a slow-down is not taking place in the construction industry.
