FTC rules credit data off-limits for list rental
Article Abstract:
Trans Union, a credit bureau based in Chicago, IL, will appeal to the FTC board of commissioners the ruling by FTC Administrative Law Judge James B. Timothy banning the use of consumer credit information in targeted mailing lists. If it loses, Trans Union will go the US Courts of Appeals, which originally sent the case into a trial process due to FTC's failure to submit proper evidence. If it wins, Trans Union, along with other credit bureaus such as Orange, CA-based Experian, can resume offering such lists. A favorable ruling for Trans Union will also greatly affect the privacy protections espoused by the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
