McAlpine/Laing undaunted by dome
Article Abstract:
The joint venture of Sir Robert McAlpine and Laing which has won the 150 million pounds sterling construction management contract for the planned Millennium Dome at Greenwich, London, England, does not believe that this will prove an impossible task. There will inevitably be challenges with building a 340 mt diameter fabric dome supported by cables suspended between 12 steel masts, but effective teamwork will ensure that the structure can be completed on time. Work is expected to begin on site in mid-1997, and the joint venture is already assessing bids for the cable, fabric and steel masts.

Railtrack sounds millennium alert
Article Abstract:
The UK construction industry as a whole will have to address the year 2000 computer date change problem, according to Railtrack, the industry's largest client. This concern has held a seminar on this issue with contractors and suppliers. At present, less than 3% of small and medium-sized construction concerns have ensured that all their information technology systems will be able to deal with the transition to the 21st century. Almost 16% of companies have so far failed to address this problem at all.
