MessageMedia to expand, eyes e-mail firms

Electronic mail marketing firm MessageMedia Inc has announced its plan to expand its market share by acquiring other e-mail service companies. The company said that it will aggressively pursue technology-based companies with own specific-targeted e-mail applications, particularly Europe-based firms. MessageMedia, with a market capitalization of $300 million, will make the acquisitions through stock swaps. The company was formed in Dec 1998 following First Virtual Holdings Inc's acquisition of Email Publishing Inc and Distributed Bits LLC.

Nearly half of online shoppers say the presence of a customer service representative on the Web site will likely make them spend more, says Charles Hemlin, head of Greenwich, CT-based online research firm NFO Interactive Inc. Operators of electronic-commerce sites, however, are reluctant to beef up their customer service staff because they want to keep their costs down, adds Hemlin.
